Most of them confuse it with adding the pages which relate to a totally different concept. Are you just starting out with WordPress?

Nothing to worry about, in this tutorial, you will have a guide to make you understand the concept of categories, tags and pages.

Every WordPress website has the navigation menus to navigate their readers.

Things You Should Know Before Starting

Every WordPress theme supports the navigation menus. First of all, you should know to create a navigation menu in WordPress.

And before that, you should know the difference between the categories and the tags.

These are two taxonomies of WordPress. You can add more topics under each category. These are hierarchical. And tags are just used to configure some specific topics.

For example :- You have written a topic related to blogging which would be a category and the tag may be growth, beginner’s guide, or something like that.

Do you know how to create a new category?

Just navigate to Posts>>Categories and a new page will appear to you. You will find a few fields to add the name and the slug for the category.

Fill them and click on the “Add new category” button. On the right side menu, you will see the list of categories you have created so far.

How Will You Add The Topics In The Menu

After creating all the categories required to start your blog, navigate to Appearance>>Menus and a new page will open for you.

You will see a few options to edit the navigation menus. First of all, choose the menu you want to edit.

Most of the WordPress themes consist more than one navigation menu. One maybe for the header and another one for the footer area.

You can see, I have chosen the Footer menu.

From the left side menu, you just have to click on the Category option to see all the categories you have created earlier.

Check the box beside the category name and click on the “Add to menu” button. You will see that on the right side, the list will contain that category.

Follow the same procedure for Adding topics in WordPress navigation menus. You can add pages, posts, custom links formats too.

Many people add some special posts in the menu for easy access and getting more exposure.

Suppose you have created a few guides which can help the readers who just started then it would be a great idea to add those in the menu.

Let me mention some important guides.

Such guides can be appealing yet productive.

Many people have a question about adjusting the location of these topics in the navigation menus. Well, you will see that you can adjust the location of all the topics while creating the menus.

Just drag and drop the topic at any position you want.

Another confusing concept occurs when people see the drop down menu with more topics.

Those topics are termed as “Sub-categories” of you’re adding one category under another. You can do that for pages and posts too.

Just drag and drop any topic under another. There is a little bit difference between adjusting the position and adding the sub-categories.

The sub-categories will a little bit intent towards the right.

How will you use these categories you have created so far

This won’t take a second. While creating a post from the WordPress post editor, you will see the list of categories created so far.

Just pick any of the categories for your post and it will get published accordingly.

Your readers will see that particular post in under the category after accessing from the navigation menu.
